Currituck Beach Lighthouse Just a 5 minute bike ride from the Purple Pelican brings you to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the last major brick lighthouse built on the Outer Banks. Climb 214 steps up to the observation deck of this 162 ft. tall light house.  The views from the top are amazing!  The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is known as a first order lighthouse, which means it has the largest of seven Fresnel lens sizes. The original source of light was a U.S. mineral oil lamp consisting of five concentric wicks; the largest was 4 inches in diameter. Maritime Forest Boardwalk & Walking Trail Experience and enjoy this Corolla attraction in the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve.  Go left out of the Purple Pelican, just a 5-minute walk to the entrance, located off of NC-12 in Ocean Hill.  The Boardwalk, which meanders through the forest  to the Currituck Sound is 3/4 mi round trip & the Walking Trail is 1.5 mi round trip. There’s a rest area with benches near the halfway point, and a wildlife information board near the sound.  Off-Road and Kayak Tours No trip to the outer banks is complete without a bit of adventure.  Check out the off-road areas if Corova, North Swan, and Swan Beach, for a great day at the beach, a few bumps, and maybe even a wild horse!.  Or, take an exciting ATV tour!!! Old Time Photo Op One of the things we always enjoy is getting our friends and family together for a photo of our time together.  For that special twist, try out Miss Kitty's Old Time Photo, located just 10 minutes South of Purple Pelican, in the Timbuck II shopping Center ( Across from Food Lion).  NC Aquarium, Manteo, NC. Just a 45 minute ride from Corolla, the Aquarium offers fun and learning activities for all. There are indoor and outdoor exhibits, classrooms, and gift shop. Wright Memorial Stop and see THE spot where aviation began!  Located in Kill Devil Hills, NC. on US -158. Head South at the intersection of US 12 and US-158 towards Nags Head. Less than 30 miles from the Purple Pelican. Outer Barks - For the pampered pooch "My friends went to the Purple Pelican and all they brought me back was this..."  This is the best place in the Outer Banks for gifts for your canine and feline friends.  The Outer Barks also offers fun stuff for the dog and cat lover.  From Mugs, to Jewelry, tee-shirts, to clocks, the Outer Barks has it.  Check out Gramma's Ginger Cookies.  They may be made for dogs but they are so good  ( and smell heavenly) even YOU might try one!  The Outer Barks is located in the Osprey Shopping Center in Duck.  Stop in and say "Hi"...
